Sub-Saharan Africa
Some countries in southern Africa have made demonstrable economic and political progress in recent years. For instance, democratic elections have taken place in many of them. But alongside these are also disintegrating governmental structures, cross-border streams of refugees, high-handed use of political power and mismanagement by the state. Without good governance, there can be no sustainable development success – in Africa in particular. Good governance is an important prerequisite if better living conditions are to be created in that part of the globe with the highest percentage of absolute poverty and the greatest portion of people living with HIV.
