Costa RicaAs agreed between Costa Rica and Germany, the focus of CIM activities in Costa Rica is primarily the development policy priority area of urban-industrial environmental protection. In addition to corporate and industrial environmental protection, measures for municipal environmental protection and waste management are also of growing importance. A comprehensive technical cooperation programme entitled Competitiveness and the Environment was launched early in 2006. CIM's contribution was to recruit the necessary experts. In response to the needs of Costa Rican partners who play a particularly significant role in development policy, CIM is also active in resource management and the development of alternative sources of energy. For this purpose, CIM also undertakes coordination measures beyond the scope of development policy priority areas. Costa Rica is strongly committed to preserving biodiversity and maintaining nature conservation zones. The country is a leader in environmental protection in Central America. This is why CIM increasingly cooperates with supraregional executing agencies with an on-site presence in Costa Rica, such as the Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE).
